BARATES ASTER !
This is what I brought
You may forget me
This is what I brought
You may forget me
This is what I brought you
This you can keep
I promise to depart
Just promise one thing
Kiss my eyes
And lay me to sleep
This you can keep
I promise to depart
Just promise one thing
Kiss my eyes
And lay me to sleep
nickname(s): Though his name in full is Barates Aster, he commonly goes by Barates and he is also sometimes called Aster or just Bara, Aster being the more preferred of the two. Otherwise, he is quite commonly known as 'slave', 'servant' and 'boy' but whether he'll answer to those has yet to be seen.
age: twenty.
sexuality: Bi-sexual. To put it bluntly, Barates doesn't really care whether you're a man or a woman, with his personality it is a tad hard to be picky. As it is now though? He's more likely to lean to asexual. Life comes before romance after all and as a slave, he isn't prime dating material anyways.
job: Servant/ Greek Slave
Race: Human

I promise you my heart
Just promise to sing
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.
Just promise to sing
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep.
body type: Of a moderately tall build or at least of a taller than average height, Barates is not a man of great muscle, if anything, he is of a more willowy frame. His legs are more muscular then his arms, though that is not to say that his arms are little more than limp noodles. Instead, they are marked by corded muscle. Not one prone to bulk, his is a physique marked by many years at sea, with a lean sort of wiry set to it.
hair and eyes: Were it not shaved clean off, Barates would be red haired though his eyes are quite visibly hazel. An odd color even among his people, Barates' hair has never taken to darkness. Born red, it stayed red never fading to black like it had amongst his siblings and though it darkened to a more mahogany hue, he was still a marked difference from the more brunette of Greeks and now, among the dark haired Egyptians, Barates can say at the very least he is used to being stared at.
clothing style: Garbed in the dress typical of Egyptian slaves, Barates wears little more than a white linen kilt, its color slightly marred by wear and tear and now more of a yellowed sort of cream. Being a slave in the palace, it is slightly more ornate than that of a common or workhouse slave, with a gilded outline along the edging. He wears no shirt, and other than the kilt his only other sort of accessory would be the arm band he refused to give up, even upon his acquisition. A small leather cord woven of brightly colored strands, it stands out slightly amongst the plentiful golden trinkets worn by the majority of the Egyptians.
overall appearance: A leanly muscled fellow with a bit more height than the average person, Barates is quite visible even from a distance. Clothed in the typical slave fashion, his skin is paler than that of the average servant and more prone to being lobster-red from sunburn than anything else. His hair is shaved short, though it has recently started growing back in odd clumps, some strands longer than the rest and giving him a rather unkempt appearance. His hair, though a shade darker than the usual tint of his skin, is red as well, though this not from the sun but from natural genetics.
The most noticeable thing about his appearance would be perhaps the brand sitting center of his back, somewhat blistered and rather raw looking, all the more apparent from his lack of a shirt. The wound still looks almost new, due to constant picking and itching despite the fact that he's had it for a few months.[/ul]

So think me naive

[/li][li]crocodiles. {perhaps he just has a fondness for reptiles in general, but the sight of seeing the mammoth crocodiles has always made Barates feel in awe}
[li]snakes. {whether it is a cobra or an adder, Barates has always had a fondness for snakes. Fortunately, he knows well enough to keep away, if only from a lesson learned after he was bitten by a snake of the less venomous variety.}
[/li][li]ships. {having been raised on a ship, it is only natural he has a fondness for them}
[/li][li]looking at scripts. {whether its just a random sheet of papyrus or a temple wall, Barates is enthralled by them and can quite happily stare at one all day}
[/li][li]baths. {a clean Barates makes a happy Barates, no?}
[/li][li]people. {this can go both ways. He enjoys watching people at the very least, seeing how the tick. Conversing with them however? That's another story}
[/li][li]knowing what's going on. {let's face it, Barates is nosy. Very, very nosy. As such, he'd rather be in the know then be asking everyone questions.}
[/li][li]Set. {of the Egyptian Gods, strangely enough it is Set who holds Barates' eye. It could be because Set is the patron god of foreigners-either that, or the funny head-who knows. This of course, does not mean that Barates is willing to worship him. He's a Greek, and proud of it.}
[/li][li]company. {never a very private person unless in one of his more foul moods, Barates is a person who thrives in company, his dislike for large groups of people not withstanding}
[/li][li]sailing. {there is nothing Barates would like more to do, than to sail, perhaps even to the edge of the world}
[/blockquote]
dislikes:
[/li][li]hippos. {first off, no matter what anyone says, hippos are rather ugly. Not to mention viscious and territorial. Let's just say that Barates has had a bad run in with them. It will save us the ranting.}
[/li][li]cleaning. {it is not the chore so much as the idea. Rest assured though, that while he will complain incessantly about having to do it, it will get done.}
[/li][li]fish. {being raised in a family of fishermen, you'd think that Barates would like fish. Unfortunately, being slapped in the face by a particularly large one's tail as a boy has settled that issue. Perhaps that's why he went to the military so fast.}
[/li][li]people. {again, it can go both ways. Personally, Barates hates large groups of people and finds them rather annoying.}
[/li][li]being stuck on land. {a sailor by heart and by trade, the ocean runs through Barates' blood. Being stuck on land was a worse blow than becoming a slave ever was}
[/li][li]royals. {seeing as Barates is at a royal's every whim, it's standard to see that he doesn't really care for them.}
[/li][li]nobles. {see above. we'd rather not have him start ranting}
[/li][li]threats. {Barates doesn't do well with threats. Being of the hard-headed somewhat naive sort (which is never a good combination) he'd rather push to see how far he can go. Unfortunately, as a slave, this hardly works out.}
[/li][li]being a slave. {a former free man, it stands to see that Barates hates being a slave despite the fact that his current situation is of his own doing.}
[/li][li]sun-burn. {lacking the caramel complexion typical to most Egyptians, Barates find himself being sunburnt in the harsh Egyptian sun and more often than not finds his skin resembling a lobster rather than its natural olive tone}
[/blockquote]
secrets:
[/li][li]Despite his love for looking at scripts, he is not educated and learned neither to read or write, not even in Greek despite it being the norm for a boy of his family to know how to do so. Hieroglyphs merely look like pretty pictures to him.
[/li][li]Though his family worshiped Poseidon and Pontus, Barates worships Hermes, finding the god more interesting. The fact that Hermes is also the patron god for travelers? Well, that does help a lot. Of course, Barates prefers to ignore the fact that Hermes is also the patron god of thieves.[/blockquote]
personality: Three words can accurately describe Barates Aster's personality: vain, moody, honorable. An odd combination even at the best of times, Bara takes great care with his appearance-slave or not. Of course, he very rarely has time to act on these impulses, having little say in where he can or cannot work. That does not mean however, that he will not attempt to wheedle a chance to clean the throne room rather than the gardens, whether it involves twisting words around until he gets what he wants or switching duties with another servant or slave.
As his current standing in life is not of his own choice, he is also prone to being moody at times, more often than not acting as if a petulant child and his tongue can become rather sharp when he lets it get away from him. He does try his best to keep with the solemn faced Greek archetype but more often than not, he finds himself failing rather dismally in that and is not the sort of person who will let life push him around.
Despite his faults, he can also be a rather loyal individual, honorable and steadfast to his ideas. Of course, he is not above snatching an extra bit of food or loitering in the baths to better his own appearance. He tries to keep his lies to a minimum, finding them useless in the long run as he's more apt to spit out the truth without realizing it anyways.
Depending on his mood at the time, he can be very awkward and usually forgets to keep a good hold of his tongue,and often finds his mouth getting away from him. He is blunt and naive to a fault, and when mixed with his hardheaded and often sullen demeanor, this tends to get him in trouble.[/li][/ul]
I'd promise you a heart

father:Diodoros, 53. A prominent fisherman, Bara's father is a retired soldier, quite ready to go into battle when needed. He was the man who pushed Bara to join the Cretian service.
siblings: The middle child of seven children, Barates has too many siblings to name, and even if one could get him to speak of one, he'd likely freeze up in an instant and refuse to say another word.
other family: Too many to name. Though his family wasn't of the richest sorts, they were influential at the very least. Still, it doesn't matter-it's not like he'll be seeing them anytime soon, or ever again really.
history:
-Born in Minoan-Crete in village of Archanes
-Went to military at 12, served as 'cabin boy' equivalent until 18 when became soldier
-Met best friend there, Pythios
-Chosen for diplomatic mission at 20 (current age)
-Mission went awry (Pythios went into harem and had some 'lady timez')
-BFF Pythios gets captured and egyptians say he becomes a slave
-Barates, knowing Pythios is more valued member of crew (Pythios being older by 6+ yrs) offers to take his place (I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!)
-Captain/head-honcho of ship decides, hey, okay that works
-Bara takes Pythios's place without Pythios saying a word of thanks
-Synopsis: Current situation is because Bara is a poor judge of character and needs to choose better BFFs.
{will combine history later, this is just a vague outline}
