Nebet smiled softly as she finished with his hair and began work on his feet. Her eyes carefully surveyed the picture as she worked on it, eyes focused. She didn't really notice Barates watching the other slaves. She was so engrossed in her work that she barely noticed the other slaves finishing up. She was comfortable in her seat working. She had barely noticed the time moving by as she continued on the feet, and from there she did some intricate work on his hands. She yawned, and the guard looked down nervously. She offered him a soft smile to let him know she was fine and could stay up long enough to get this done. Tucking a piece of her long hair behind her ear again she looked up and at Barates when she heard him talking. When he started to laugh, she could not help a quiet laugh escaping her as well. She looked at him when she was done, and said,"we might be wierd, but egyptians, or at least some, see a friend as a friend. I am one of those, and I don't care about the staion someone is in. A friend is a friend to me." Her quiet voice finished and she smiled more softly as she listened to him talk again and said,"thanks for the compliment. My sisters usually say that I am a bit different from how most royals should act. But I like to respect people by their acts instead of their stations." When she finished this sentence, she got to work again, finishing the hands details and working on the wall behind him and the lines on his face.

The princess was yawning more frequently now, Barates thought with an amused smile that held a tinge of worry. About to speak up, he stopped himself short, settling for glancing away awkwardly. Friendly as the princess was, he didn’t think that chiding her like well, a child, was going to do any good. Besides, he was not her brother nor father…it was not his responsibility to do so. Still, however he tried to convince himself otherwise, Barates couldn’t help but cast the girl a worried look.
Still, his worries seemed to be for not as Nebet echoed his laughter, and listening to her quiet response, Barates’ lips arched into a smile. “Friend is friend, eh? Sound like good plan-er-motto...?” Brow furrowing as he fumbled for words, Barates scowled, he shook his head and gave an aggravated sigh before he finally smiled again, “Eh, not bad to be different. Respect good. “ Going quiet again as Nebet went back to work, sketching out minute details, Barates tilted his head to the side and shifted his shoulders to get a bit more comfortable. The wall his back rested on was no longer cool, warmed by his body heat and it made a decent surface to lean against, even if the blistered brand on his back ached at the pressure.
Moving his hand discretely to scratch at the wound-the main reason that it hadn’t healed completely yet-Barates fought back a yawn himself-Nebet’s earlier ones seeming to incite the behavior. Watching the very last slave leave the room with hardly a shift of cloth, Barates finally gave into the temptation, jaw stretching slightly as he yawned. Fighting back another, Barates glanced towards Nebet’s direction. If he was tired, she surely had to be. “You tired? You yawn earlier. Need to finish later?” Voicing his concerns as best he could with his limited capabilities in terms of speech while pointedly avoiding the topic of his own yawns (though the princess had stopped him from doing these chores, he still had quite a bit to do) Barates cocked his head to the side.

Nebet smiled gently as she listened to him, then odded as she said,"thank you. It is always good in my opinion to respect someone regardless of their station. I always welcome another friend." Her gentle smile turned into a thoughtful one as she worked on the wall behind him, letting her hand work methodically and smoothly. She liked the man as a friend, and she respected him. It was difficult not to respect him as she worked. When he spoke again, she nodded her ead and said,"yes, respect is good. You hurt someones friends or loved ones, though and it is a very good way to make sure they hate you." She looked closely as she worked out a few minor details, letting her intense eyes carefully trace over the details as she worked. When he spoke again, he seemed worried, and the princess offered him a soft smile as she said,"I am almost finished. Just have a bit of shadowing to do." She got to work on this as she spoke, making sure the shadows and the minute details matched as she smiled softly. She soon enough bit her lower lip as she finished with the smaller details, the shadowing and was almost finished with the wall. Then she quietly stood and walked over to him, holding the paper out with a soft smile to him as she waited for his reply to her work.

Blinking as the princess thanked him, Barates paused before he smiled, “Eh? Welcome.” Going quiet as Nebet’s smile became thoughtful rather than kind, Barates shuffled again in place only to look up as the young girl began speaking once more, thinking her words over before he snorted, half laughing. “Ah-that one true. Easy way to make hated!” An amused light entered the young man’s eyes and he tilted his head, glancing at the tiny princess with a curious look as the princess offered him a soft smile.
“Almost finished?” he parroted, perking up visibly and nearly undoing the pose the princess had told him to stay in for the drawing-though to tell the truth all of his shifting and shuffling earlier had left it slightly skewed. Fingers practically drumming against his knees with anticipation, Barates grinned as Nebet finished with the smaller details, watching with rising curiosity as the tiny princess stood up and then walked over to him, the paper held out and a soft smile on her lips. Not daring to take the papyrus into his own hands, Barates stared at it curiously, eyes wide and inquisitive before his face split into a grin. “Eh! This what I look like?” Though he had at least glimpsed himself in a mirror, seeing a drawing of himself was a new feeling altogether and quite frankly, spoke quite vigorously to the Greek’s vain side. The princess had captured him well, and as he tilted his head to the side to get a better look, Barates’ grin widened. “Amazing!” Resisting the urge to ask the princess for it, the slave stared at the image a moment longer, before he glanced at the girl, still smiling broadly, “You very good!”

Nebet nodded her head as he talked about making enemies, her blue eyes intent now as she finished the picture. Her blue eyes would glance at him every once in a while, and she would offer him a smile before she would add another minute detail. She would chew on her lip every once in a while as she got to a more difficult part. She loved this drawing, and she kept working swiftly and quickly, but not fast enough that she would end up making a mistake. She looked up and at him from the ground when he said amazing, and blushed a soft pink. She looked delighted with his reply as her blue eyes lit up. She let out a breathe that she had not realized she had been holding as she let him get the full effect of her sketch. She felt a happiness at being praised, and she could tell he was really happy with her work too as she smiled a soft smile and said,'thanks. I like to work hard oon my arts." When he said she was very good, she let herself smile a bit more, her blue eyes lit up with joy at knowing someone liked her work. She then let a thoughtful look cross her face as she thought of something and said,"here. I have a good memory, so it should be no problem to make another one." She let her eyes catch his and offered him the papyrus with a soft smile and a nod.

Still staring at the picture with longing, Barates nearly jumped as Nebet offered him the picture. Looking up at her with wide eyes as he had yet to stand, Barates blinked before he gave an awkward smile and took the picture from her hands, holding it in a gentle grip as he turned it this way and that, getting a better look for it. The grin that had sprung up the moment he looked at the finished product had yet to leave, and if anything, shone brighter than before. His inspection done, Barates painstakingly folded the papyrus in half- if it could be called folding. Pinching the corners of the papyrus, while taking care not to crease it, Barates readjusted his grip a few times before he shot the girl a thankful look.
“Thank you.” The Greek’s normally blunt tone was slightly subdued and still in awe and he couldn’t help but shoot vain glances towards the picture in his hands. Returning the girl’s smile with his own broad one, the Greek paused before he gave a sheepish grin. “If-if need, will happily pose for you again.” There was no lie in the young man’s tone and though the thought of getting out of chores was a nice one, that was no longer the main concern in his mind. He’d gladly let Nebet draw another picture of him-and perhaps, Barates thought idly, he could send one to his family back in Crete. At least they would have something to remind them of him, since he’d surely not be coming home.
Smile faltering at the thought, Barates shoved it back in place, forcing the rising depression down. Now was no time to get angsty-not when presented with something as wonderful as this, and to just make his point clear, Barates grinned, hardly caring that he was repeating himself. “If, if want to draw—just ask. Will gladly help anytime.”

Nebet smiled softly at his thanking her and said,"no problem." Her soft blues looked down and at him as she watched him carefully pinch the corners to make sure there was no creases in the sketch. She felt the same soft smile as she looked at the guard who had stood there. Even the guard was fighting a smile for the princess, having seen how much work she had put into the sketch she had now given the man. She finally let her thoughts go to the picture. She had committed the pose to memory, so she knew she could do a painting of it later and asked him,"would you mind if I did a painting of your pose? I can show you the finished product after I am done and get your input." She let her eyes land on the floor after she said this and kept the soft smile. When he said he would pose for her anytime, she said softly,"I might just take you up on that offer. I enjoyed drawing your sketch, so it would be fun to do it again." She smiled softly after she said this, then noticed his smile falter. Her blues shot with concern for her friend as she wondered what he was thinking about. She let her eyes land on the papyrus and then leaned foward to examine it closely. As she did this, she whispered loud enough for only him to hear,"I will make sure to get your family a sketch as well. I know it must be hard to have to be without them, and I could never imagine how hard it would be if the roles were reversed." She did know, though as she stood again and thought of her father. He was gone and she could never see him again. She knew how difficult it was to lose someone important, but she did not saything as she finally turned away and went to collect her papyrus sketchpad. When he said he would pose for her again, repeating himself, she let a sympathetic and soft smile t her lips as she said,"like I said earlier, I will probably take you up on that. I sincerely enjoyed drawing you, and hope that I will be able to in the future." She offered him one last sincere smile as she bit her lower lip and waited for a reply from her new friend.

Looking up as the tiny princess asked for his permission to do a painting, Barates quickly nodded his head, still darting awed glances towards the sketch in his hands every few moments. “Of course! Your picture. Your choice. But…” the Greek continued with another quick look towards the papyrus clutched between his fingers, “…will be happy to give opinion.”
As well as indulge in his own vanity when looking at a complete portrait, Barates added in his mind. A sketch was nice-but a portrait? Well, everyone had their vices. Smiling deliriously at the mere thought, Barates quickly shoved the expression away before it could fully take hold of his face, and instead muted his smile back to its former more appreciative state. The expression faltered slightly though, as he caught sight of Nebet leaning forward to inspect the papyrus curled in his hands.
She-she wasn’t going to take it back, was she? Tightening his grip minutely, Barates fought the urge to curl back into the wall and take the picture with him. A slight jerk of his body was the only clue to his unease, and as Nebet whispered, Barates could barely hide the sigh of relief. Looking towards the girl with a thankful curve to his lips and a soft look in his eyes, Barates murmured a muted word of thanks, inclining his head slightly to let the princess know he had heard.
Still, he wondered how she was actually going to find his family-he had only told her the island and the village he lived in. He had said nothing of his parents’ names nor those of his siblings, but, Barates mused idly, being a princess she surely had her ways. Besides, she probably just had to go to a trader and mention his name. At the very least, Barates thought, he was popular with them, if it could be called that and then if only because he bugged them constantly for information.
Watching as the princess, having said her piece, moved away to grab her sketch pad, Barates took that moment to stand up and stretch his legs, pausing a moment to adjust his kilt from where it had begun to tilt at an angle before he turned to glance up at the sound of Nebet’s voice. Lips perking up in a smile once more, the Greek grinned. “Eh, just let know. As said, will be happy to pose. Glad you enjoy drawing-but now…” Barates trailed off, glancing around the near empty room-most of the other slaves and servant’s having left, “Afraid have to go. Have….” even the smile on his face could barely hide the disdain crawling through his eyes, mouth twisting as if he had stepped on a rather crunchy bug, “…more chores.”
And indeed he did-cleaning the kitchens had only been his morning task and a quick glance to look through the gleaming windows showed that the sun was high in the sky, and that it was mid afternoon at the very least. Lips curling with distaste, Barates shot the sky a dirty look before he smiled at Nebet and directed a smaller one towards the guard looming behind her. “Appreciate drawing. Will-will store safe place.”

Nebet offered a soft smile at his stunned expression. She had a way to find out who this mans parents were, and being the gentle girl she was, she was going to help him. She looked away from him as she walked to grab her sketchpad, and said,"I know things are difficult right now. But things often have a way of working themselves out. Just remember that, and I hope that the Gods find a way for something good to come of this." She looked at the ground as she said this, her blue eyes soft. When he said he had chores, she miled softly at him and said,"I wish you luck, and hope the Gods bless you." She kept a soft smile on her face as her guard, placed a hand on her shoulder. She nodded to him and started out the door. She heard him say he would store the drawing and she said,"ok, I can see you like it, and like I mentioned earlier too..." She trailed off with a sincere smile before she turned aand walked out with her guard.

Listening in a contemplative silence as Nebet went to grab her sketch pad, Barates’ lips quirked-the action just the slightest bit bitter. “Ah, but you forget princess. Your gods are not my gods.” Shaking his head, Barates grinned and though the expression was bright, the look in his eyes was not. “But I thank you for the wishes of luck.”
Waving a hand as the princess departed, Barates watched her and her hulking guard go. Only when both were out of sight did he sigh and run a hand through his hair. What an odd princess indeed- consorting with a slave, and her guard hadn’t even said a word to stop her.
Picking up his forgotten reed brush from earlier, Barates shook his head and exhaled one last time. She was nice though-he’d surely see if he could spot her around. But first…the Greek frowned, wincing as he glanced around the kitchens, it was his turn to weed the gardens.
Joy.
